Survivors International provides essential medical, psychological, and social services to survivors of torture and gender-based persecution living in the Bay Area. For more information about our organization, see our website at www.survivorsintl.org. We are currently accepting applications for a media intern to support outreach and community awareness efforts. We are seeking a mature and committed individual to support our office staff, located in downtown San Francisco. Our interns create a significant and positive impact in the lives of torture survivors through their work.

Duties may include, but are not limited to: writing press releases and sending out to print, electronic, and online media; developing a database of and relationships with media contacts; maintaining agency website; and crafting and distributing marketing materials for events. A part of this position will include working with staff to develop a communication plan. This position initially reports to the Executive Director and is also supported by the Senior Case Manager, who acts as volunteer coordinator for the organization.

Work will be for 5-10 hours per week, depending on current needs. This is an unpaid position. The work of the Media Intern will make a significant and positive impact in the lives of torture survivors. A minimum of a five-month initial commitment is preferred.

This position is unpaid.

Required Qualifications:

• Training and/or experience in public relations, marketing, and/or journalism.
• Commitment to human rights issues.
• Knowledge of and experience with Bay Area media outlets.
• Mature understanding of the ethics of confidentiality as relates to client information.
• General understanding of human rights and immigration frameworks.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
