Key Responsibilities The Taproot Foundation is seeking two qualified candidates to join the Web Development team: an Assistant Web Developer and a User Interface Designer. Both team members will play a critical role in the overall success of the organization by designing, developing and improving web-based applications for the Taproot Foundation intranet that allow staff, volunteers and nonprofit clients to work productively. The Assistant Web Developer's responsibilities will include server-side web application development and possibly some third-party software integration. The User Interface Designer will be responsible for the design and implementation of user-friendly interfaces for web applications on the Taproot Foundation intranet. Assistant Web Developer responsibilities will include some or all of the following: • Help define project scope and gather requirements • Design normalized MySQL database schemas • Write (and read) database-intensive PHP application code • Research and evaluate third-party software and services to inform build/buy decisions • Learn third-party APIs (e.g., PHP- or XML-based) • Integrate in-house systems with external systems by adapting existing in-house MySQL/PHP-based applications, configuring third-party software/services, and learning and using third-party APIs User Interface Designer responsibilities will include some or all of the following: • Design web user interfaces, from wireframes to HTML mockups • Perform usability testing • Write clean HTML/CSS/JavaScript code that integrates with a PHP back-end Experience/Skills • Specific to the Assistant Web Developer: • Server-side, database-driven application design and development, using PHP and SQL (strong Perl, Java, or C/C++ background may replace PHP requirement) • Solid grounding in software design principles and methodologies • Familiarity with UNIX (any flavor) preferred • JavaScript a plus • Specific to the User Interface Designer: • Versed in user interface design, information architecture, and usability issues • Web user interface implementation using cross-browser-compatible HTML and CSS • JavaScript a plus • Graphic design background a plus • Required for both roles: • Genuine interest in the nonprofit sector • Ability to take initiative and identify opportunities to improve systems and processes • Excellent communication skills (written & verbal) • Flexible personality to adapt to a small environment and fast paced organization • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor at all times, work gracefully under pressure and maintain a strong work ethic • Bachelor’s degree (for Assistant Web Developer, a Computer Science major is preferred) Reporting Relationship: This position reports to the Extranet and Web Developer. Location: San Francisco (near Union Square) Start Date: Spring 2008 Compensation: This position is offered through the AmeriCorps *VISTA program, which includes an AmeriCorps*VISTA annual living stipend and education award, plus generous health and vacation benefits.
